Does Sparkling Water Hydrate You?


Water, as we all know, has time and again been the best source of hydration. But what’s all this buzz about “sparkling water”? 

How sparkling water will hydrate you? Can you count this water in your daily water intake? How is it beneficial for your body? Too many questions and here are your answers!

What is sparkling water?

Sparkling water is the water infused ( by applying higher gas pressure and lower temperature) with carbon dioxide along with different flavorings. It is also known as carbonated water or seltzer. It is basically natural water with added carbonation. 

This sparkling water with carbonation produces an exciting fizz and bubbles and that’s what attracts most of the people towards them! 

Different types of sparkling water

Remember those science practicals where we used to add baking soda with water just to enjoy that fizz and bubbles produced? They were fun! Guess what they have matured into now? Yes! Sparkling water, just in a more defined and healthy way along with variations!

There are many variants of sparkling water which are easily available around you. These can be namely-

  • soda water or club soda
  • tonic water
  • Seltzer
  • carbonated mineral water  and many more

The difference in all these drinks is not very large, but they do have slight variations in their fizz and taste. Now, whether these variants are capable of hydrating you adequately, is what is a matter of debate here.

  • Does seltzer water hydrate you?

This type is tap water that’s been filtered and artificially carbonated. It has no added ingredients like sodium or potassium salts.

According to experts, seltzer water is as hydrating as normal water and there is no harm in gulping it down in your routine. Seltzer is an excellent alternative to sugary sodas and juices, that also provide us with hydration but contain preservatives in them.

However, one thing which needs to be kept in mind is too much consumption of seltzer can result in acidity and, bloating. It is suggested to take care of the amount of seltzer you are consuming at a time. Also, plain water might be a better choice for some individuals during a workout.

  • Does soda water hydrate you?

Club soda or soda water is highly beneficial as it has no added sugar and calories that usually come from sweetened flavorings. Which are added in most carbonated drinks. The salt added in this water helps neutralize the acidity making you feel relaxed instead of bloated. 

Soda water has added sodium content in it so if your doctor has advised you to step away from sodium in your diet, then this water may not be a good option for you. According to some research, if soda water is very acidic, it can also cause dental erosions.

  • Does mineral water hydrate you?

Mineral water comes from underground reservoirs and is free of any chemical processing. As the name suggests, it also has many minerals like magnesium, calcium, and sodium.

While we say mineral water is free of any kind of processing, the addition of carbon dioxide to it may prove beneficial. It is a safe choice for keeping yourself hydrated all the time.

Carbon dioxide helps prevent oxidation and limits bacterial growth in mineral water. Naturally, carbonated water gets its carbon dioxide from the source and is added after extraction of the natural water from the reservoirs.

However, to some extent, mineral water can cause acidity and or can damage tooth enamel, and thus, it is advised to consume it in optimum amounts keeping in observation any ill-effects and consulting your doctor regarding it.

  • Does distilled water hydrate you?

A kind of purified water, distilled water is devoid of any kind of salts, minerals, and other organic materials. These are removed by collecting the steam from boiling water. Distilled water is safe to drink, but due to the removal of all the minerals from it, it seems flat and bland.

Distilled water can be an option for hydrating yourself, but since it’s cut off from all the important electrolytes, you may miss out on essential minerals if you only rely on this water. Generally, it does not keep you as hydrated as other drinks.


Sparkling water vs Regular Water

The debate on whether sparkling water is better than regular water and vice versa is still on. According to a 2016 study, it was proved that sparkling water is as hydrating as regular water and that makes sense too as sparkling water is just regular water infused with carbon dioxide.

Sparkling water, due to an added carbon dioxide in it, can be acidic and can cause GI issues as well. So, if you are prone to bloating, it may not be a very good choice for you and the best way is to stick to regular water to avoid any digestive problems. 

There are also different variants of sparkling water so it all depends on how your body perceives these carbonated drinks. It is always suggested to consume the water that suits your body type as well as your hydration capacity.

Does sparkling water hydrate you?

As explained earlier, sparkling water is equally hydrating as any other kind of water or still water, the only difference being the addition of carbon dioxide due to which the absorbing capacity slightly differs.

This carbonation actually gets separated from the water as soon as the water enters your belly so hydration is not really affected.

According to a 2015 study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the impact of carbonation of sparkling water is next to none so it imparts the same hydrating benefits as regular water.

Is sparkling water better than still water?

There is a very slight difference between still water and sparkling water as discussed above. Both are equally hydrating. Still, water is absorbed more quickly than sparkling or carbonated water.

But once it is absorbed, the effects and the benefits are the exact same.

Sparkling water is also a good alternative for those who are not much into still water because of its flatness and tastelessness. With sweetened flavorings and that exciting fizz, these people find sparkling water to be a better option for hydration than regular water.

People usually do not prefer consuming sparkling water during or after their workouts as it can cause acidity and bloating and thus, here still water holds its supremacy. Other than that, the experts still say you can drink carbonated water to reach your recommended daily serving of water (eight glasses) each day.

In all, both still water and sparkling water are viable options for rehydration. It’s a win-win from both sides.
